Bangkok Day 1: commercial shopping

I'll write the recap tomorrow I'm way too sleepy and tired right now. Edit: Ok I overcsmemy sleepiness to write this post. I know if I don't do it now I will probably never finish it. So I'm in Bangkok, partly because my Vietnamese Visa is expiring soon, and partly because I wanted to check out the city and the products it has to offer. I haven't been to Bangkok in ages and as for the commercial districts, Sukhumvit, Central World, Siam, it hasn't changed a bit. Still this odd fanciness in the middle of not-fancy-streets. Anyway, it took me two hours last night to find a hotel because I, smart as Iam, booked only one day in advance. There were a billion options for more fancy places starting at about 1.5 mil VND a night, but I was looking for something below 1 mil, and leaving out the hostel options (all the nice ones were booked out) and the mediocore hotels with shit reviews, and the ones too far from public transportation, I was left with one choice: THEE Hotel. It was the nicest and cheapest hotel I could find after two hours of research ! I paid 3.5 mil VND for four nights, two people. Pretty fair price !

Luckily the rooms of this boutique hotel look pretty much as inthe pictures. My deluxe room was clean and spacious, but it was also on the sunny side, so when I first came in, it was boiling ! What I also don't like is that the A/C has this disgusting moldy A/C smell. Even worse, it's streaming the air right towards the beds, and you get hit by that smell right into your face. I lit my new Ikea candle and turned off the A/C to make things a little less bad. I dont know about aircon in other rooms but I can't sleep with aircon pointing directly towards me. Can't avoid it in this room since it's too close and right next to the bed. My bed is big and comfy though : )

The overall design and concept of the hotel is really nice, even though a tad too spare for my taste. My room is really big butthere is no closet and only one night table.

It's a boutique hotel, and a kinda hipster one as well. Hence these nice shower gel and shampoo bottles : ) bathrooms weren't made that well. They could have looked really posh, but whoever put in the tiles and door did a shit job.

The location of Thee Hotel is not bad, no 10 minutes to the sky train, family mart and 7/11 everywhere, and it's in a rather quiet side alley of Sukhumvit, so not much noice at night (now).

My firs destination today was Central Embassy shopping mall! I actually went there because I wanted to go to Din Thai Fung, but I also read about the food court Eathai, which was supposed to be cool.

There's a supermarket which is great for buying gifts because a lot of the products offered have cool packaging and it's fairly cheap as well.

Back to Eathai. So there are different stalls and you can pick between regional dishes or just stuff from street food kinda stalls. I walked around and tried this and that. Overall the food didn't excite me too much, but the atmosphere and experience were nice!

Took this just because my brother works for Hyatt and it reminded me of him. Hopefully I can get my 50% off family discount here one day.

The architecture from outside is sickkkkkk. After Central World we walked to Siam to get papaya salad, but on the way to that restaurant we snacked on enough street food stuff that we decided to go to Ikea, to get it over with.

There's a free shuttle bus from some BTS station, but after a long day window shopping and carrying around a lot of bags and a camera, you don't want to do that to yourself. Do me a favour and get a cab. Ikea in BKK is pretty much like everywhere. I was sooooo tired after we came out and decided to get most of the things I wanted in Germany, cos it's cheaper. I was soooo glad to see a taxi stand right outside. My feet were aching, I was sweaty and sleepy, and sooo glad when we came back into the hotel room... Which unfortuantely smelled shit because of the air conditioner. Btw I took the public transportation, it's fucking long. If you got time, go for it.

Doneeee ! Tomorrow I'll go to the wholesale markets and check out all these hipster cafes that were recommended to me. Thanks everyone so much : ) ! I'll also carefully prepare my JJ market experience, because I hate travelling unprepared ! I have to google things to the very core. I don't speak Thai, so at least I need security through knowledge !
